The inaugural Alberta Puck Kids' Cancer hockey tournament, presented by CC&L Private Capital, took place on March 6, 2026, at Edge School in Alberta. The event brought together teams of Albertan professionals to compete for a shared goal: supporting children with cancer by sending them to transformative summer camps.
Inspired by the long-standing success of Toronto’s Bay Street Kicks Kids’ Cancer soccer tournament, the event was organized by Tom Stachiw and Sean Thompson, Wealth Advisors at CC&L Private Capital. Both are based in Calgary. “Hosting a hockey tournament made sense, as hockey represents resilience, teamwork, and the power of community – values that mirror the strength of the kids and families we’re supporting through this event,” said Tom Stachiw. The tournament raised $88,167, which went directly to Camp Quality Alberta.
Camp Quality
Camp Quality supports children and their families who have been affected by childhood cancer through providing free overnight summer camps and year-round programs. All Camp Quality sites are accessible for wheelchairs and offer other necessary support, with doctors and nurses onsite to ensure treatment is not a barrier to participation. It also offers the siblings of children who have been in, or are currently going through, treatment the opportunity to attend, giving their parents the chance to rest and reconnect.
Tom added, “It costs on average about $2,500 to send one child to camp for a week. Our goal is to fully cover that cost for families, making it accessible for people across the province. The money raised will enable 35 kids to attend camp this summer.”
Tom joined the board of Camp Quality Alberta in May 2025. “I visited the Easter Seals Camp Horizon campus during the first week of August last year,” he commented. “It’s an unbelievable spot up near the mountains. I had the opportunity to hang out with the campers for an afternoon, playing in the splash pads and watching them on the high ropes course. It was great to see first-hand the impact our support has on campers and the volunteers who care for them.”
CC&L Foundation
Sean Thompson, added: “The support we received from our colleagues has been incredible. CC&L Private Capital stepped up as title sponsor for the event, and CC&L Foundation provided a charitable donation. Having the support of our colleagues makes the experience even more meaningful.”
The CC&L Foundation supports numerous not-for-profit organizations across Canada, focusing on organizations where employees and partners have a personal connection. The foundation aims to promote a better environment, improve education outcomes, advance science and medicine, build stronger communities, and encourage the arts.
Puck drop
“Two of the campers joined us for the ceremonial puck drop during the first game, which the CC&L Private Capital team played in. Being on the ice with them, Sean and the rest of the team was a special moment for me – and a great reminder of why we’re there,” Tom added.
