Q&A with Tori Cole, Senior Analyst, Total Portfolio Management

Tell us about your path to CC&L Private Capital:
I joined CC&L Private Capital as an intern in 2021 while completing my Commerce degree at Queen’s University. At the time, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in investment management and work toward earning my CFA designation after graduation. My summer at CC&L Private Capital showed me that the firm is uniquely positioned for people looking to explore different areas of the industry and discover where their interests and strengths are best suited, all while learning alongside an incredibly supportive and talented team.
What was your internship experience like?
My internship was rotational, which gave me exposure to several areas of the business including Client Service, Operations, and Compliance. It was a great opportunity to learn how the different teams work together and helped me build a strong foundational knowledge of CC&L Private Capital early on. The experience also confirmed my interest in investment management and the firm’s collaborative culture.
How did your career progress after your internship?
After my internship, I joined the firm full-time in Private Client Service and gradually took on more responsibility over the next two and a half years, supporting my Wealth Advisor and his clients. Thereafter, I completed a number of secondment terms across CC&L Private Capital’s different investment teams – as well as one with CC&L Financial Group’s real estate firm, Crestpoint – before returning to the Total Portfolio Management team as a Senior Analyst. This unique experience gave me the opportunity to explore different areas of interest and ultimately find the path best suited to me, and speaks to the firm’s commitment to support the growth and development of young professionals.
What has enabled your career development?
A big part of my growth has been the willingness of people across the firm to invest in and mentor junior team members. The culture encourages curiosity, collaboration and taking initiative, which has really supported my development. I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with leaders across different teams, take on meaningful projects, and continue learning through experiences like the Achievers Development Program.
The Achievers Development Program is an annual professional development program that supports a selected group of high potential staff in key areas: sponsorship and mentorship, leadership team exposure, and career development, while working on a strategically important project for the firm.
What advice would you give to prospective interns?
Be curious, ask questions, and take advantage of every opportunity to learn. The internship is a great way to build relationships across the firm and gain exposure to different parts of the business. You’ll really get out of the experience what you put into it, so stay engaged, be open-minded and don’t hesitate to get involved wherever you can
