For more than 140 years, FIRST UNITED has been a source of dignity, belonging and justice for people experiencing homelessness, poverty and other complex challenges in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Today, the organization provides essential services, community connection, advocacy and healing while continuing to respond to the evolving needs of one of Canada's most vulnerable communities.
Supporting organizations that strengthen the communities they serve is a natural extension of CC&L Private Capital’s commitment to responsible stewardship and community investment. Daniel Wong, CC&L Private Capital Wealth Advisor, recently secured a new commitment of $100,000 from CC&L Foundation in support of FIRST UNITED. This commitment builds on our previous five-year, $250,000 contribution, reflecting our ongoing belief in FIRST UNITED's mission and the meaningful difference it makes.
"Our support for FIRST UNITED is about investing in an organization that has earned the trust of its community over many decades," says Daniel. "Their work reaches people facing some of life's most difficult circumstances, and we're proud that CC&L Foundation can continue to help them deliver vital services where they're needed most."
“At CC&L Private Capital, we believe strong communities are built through long-term partnerships. By renewing our support for FIRST UNITED, we are helping sustain an organization whose impact extends far beyond today — creating opportunities for dignity, belonging and hope for years to come.”
Connor, Clark & Lunn Foundation
Each year, CC&L Foundation supports numerous not-for-profit organizations across Canada, focusing on organizations where employees and partners of the broader CC&L Financial Group have a personal connection. The foundation aims to promote a better environment, improve education outcomes, advance science and medicine, build stronger communities, and encourage the arts.
Rudy Kerklaan, former Vice Chairman of CC&L Private Capital, spearheaded the firm’s involvement with the work of FIRST UNITED. Rudy currently serves as Co-chair of the First Forward Capital Campaign, and as Director and Chair of the Nominations Committee for United Way Centraide Canada’s Board of Directors. Daniel adds, “Rudy’s philanthropic spirit continues to inspire us, and I’m proud to carry that commitment forward on behalf of CC&L Private Capital.”
A first for FIRST UNITED
This renewed commitment comes at an important time for the organization. Earlier this year, FIRST UNITED celebrated the opening of its new purpose-built facility at 320 East Hastings Street — a milestone made possible through the support of donors, partners and community members.
The new space has been thoughtfully designed to expand programs and services while creating a welcoming environment where people can access support with dignity. “We are proud to continue standing alongside FIRST UNITED as it advances its mission of building a stronger, more compassionate Downtown Eastside community,” Daniel adds.
